This is a separate modeling figure cast from resin in the large scale of 1:32. It represents the third crew member of the German twin-engine Gotha bomber of the First World War period in the flying dress of the day. The figure is meant to complete a large aircraft model or a diorama, where it will give the machine a comparative size and bring an otherwise static scene to life. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue and paints are not part of the package.

The real subject

The German Gotha bombers were large twin-engine machines with open crew stations. Flying was done at altitudes where the cold and the airflow were the main enemy, and the crew therefore wore a heavy leather coverall, a leather helmet, protective goggles and gloves. It is precisely such equipment that the casting captures. In 1:32 the folds of the clothing, the straps and the fine modeling of the face and hands stand out, and they decide the final impression most of all.

Building and painting tips

First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, so that the remains of mold release agent are removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutter and sand the surfaces down; when sanding resin, protect your airways. It is glued with super glue (cyanoacrylate), ideally only after the base color has been sprayed. For skin and leather, acrylic paints applied with a brush in thin layers prove themselves, and oil paints or a wash will deepen the shadows. A matte coat at the end evens the surface out and plays down unwanted sheen.
