About product

Masks for British roundels, Hawker Tempest Mk.VI 1:32 (MH models)

A set of self-adhesive masking templates with which you spray the British national roundels onto a model of the Hawker Tempest Mk.VI fighter in 1:32 scale. It is neither a decal nor a kit: it is a tool thanks to which the insignia are created directly in paint. That removes the danger of the carrier film silvering, the result has the same gloss as the surrounding camouflage and there is no risk of a decal wrinkling on an uneven surface.

The real subject

The Hawker Tempest was among the most capable British piston fighters of the closing stages of the Second World War. The Mk.VI version was the last production variant of the family; it differed from the earlier machines mainly in the arrangement of the power plant and the cooling, and in the postwar years it served above all in areas with a warm climate. British roundels went through several forms during service, so it is always worth relating the color scheme and the size of the insignia to the particular machine you are building.

How to use the masks

Apply them only onto a perfectly dry and smooth painted surface. Transfer the template carefully, press it down with a soft stick and seal the edges thoroughly so that paint does not run underneath. Spray perpendicularly, in several very thin coats and rather at lower pressure, because a heavy coat creates a step at the edge. Cover the surroundings with tape or paper. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has set, pulling across the edge at an acute angle rather than straight up. On multicolor roundels you work circle by circle, starting with the lightest shade.

Who the set is for

  • Builders who prefer sprayed insignia to decals
  • Anyone interested in the Royal Air Force of the postwar period
  • Airbrush users with experience of masking

This is a masking accessory, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package. The templates are cut for the Tempest Mk.VI kit from Special Hobby; check before you buy that they match your version.

FAQ

It is not. These are masking templates cut for the Special Hobby kit, used on an already built or part-built model in 1:32 scale.

A sprayed insignia has no carrier film, so it does not silver, it keeps the same gloss as the surrounding paint and it does not wrinkle over rivets or panel lines.

Shortly after the paint has set, pulling at an acute angle across the edge. Once the paint has fully cured there is a risk of pulling off a piece of the finish with the mask.

An airbrush gives the best result thanks to the thin coat. With a spray can or a brush the risk of paint running under the edge of the template is considerably higher.
