About product

The vision panel behind the pilot's head

The rear section of the Hurricane's glazing tends to be the one most often skimped. Behind the sliding part a fixed vision panel continues, set into the fuselage decking; it has bars of its own and at the time of the Battle of Britain it was painted over on some machines, because the sun reflected in it. Anyone who overlooks it when masking gets a model on which one panel shines differently from the rest of the cockpit.

Side windows and their angles

Besides the rear vision panel this type also has narrow side panels between the frame and the decking. They are small, irregular and each has a different angle, so cutting them from tape means producing three different shapes and hoping they fit. The pre-cut set contains each panel separately and in the right shape, which on this part of the model is a saving that shows in the result more than on the large front windscreen.

Three insignia and what to do with them

This variant of the set carries three national insignia masks. British roundels went through several changes in the proportions of their rings during the war, so spraying them means having control over the result even where a ready sheet would offer only one form. Sprayed paint also holds on a rough surface on which a decal film likes to lift.

Recommended order of work

It is a good idea to deal with the rear vision panel before the main canopy. It sits deeper, it is harder to reach and applying its mask later would risk disturbing the finished edge of the neighboring panel.

Fine tweezers with flat jaws serve equally well, because the smallest pieces are hard to transfer with fingers and a greasy fingerprint on the glass then shows even under the paint.

FAQ

Three.

The masks cover the cockpit glazing including the fixed sections. It is worth comparing the exact extent with the kit you intend to build, though.

They are small, irregular and each sits at a different angle. Hand-cut tape needs three different shapes for them.

The less accessible rear sections first, and only then the main canopy. That avoids damaging edges that are already finished.
