The sheet from the American brand Two Bobs brings markings for F/A-18C and F/A-18D machines of the US Marine Corps from Operation Iraqi Freedom. According to the name these are aircraft of squadrons with the nicknames Thunderbolts and Vikings. The package holds decals only — the plastic Hornet kit in 1:32 scale has to be obtained separately. The sheet is extensive, as a large scale allows: even small lettering is legible and the technical markings take up a noticeable area.
The F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine multi-role carrier aircraft. The C version is single-seat and the D version two-seat — the Marine Corps used it mainly for night attack duties and for forward air control. Machines deployed over Iraq usually carried a gray low-visibility finish, on which decals are practically the only carrier of more prominent markings, so the quality of the sheet matters more than on brightly finished aircraft.
A gloss surface is the foundation. On matte paint a decal is laid onto a microscopically rough surface, air gets under the film and a silvery rim appears. So spray gloss clear, let it dry overnight and only then work. Cut the decal out as close to the artwork as possible, so that a minimum of clear film is left, soak it for a few seconds in lukewarm water and let it rest on a paper towel until it can be moved. Slide it onto the spot together with the backing paper, correct it with a brush and blot the excess water away with a towel. Use a decal softener sparingly and do not touch the decal once it has been applied until it has dried. Finally clear coat everything in the degree of sheen you want.
