Masking set for the P-47D in 1:32 scale. Pre-cut films bound the canopy frames from the outside and the inside and are joined by three national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Thunderbolt was a massive machine with a bulky fuselage wrapped around a radial engine, and its sides offer large unbroken areas. It is precisely on those that the difference between the two ways of applying markings shows best, because there is nothing to break them up.
A decal needs a gloss base to succeed. On a matte finish air is trapped under its film and milky patches appear, which modelers call silvering. That means spraying a gloss coat, laying the insignia down, waiting for it to dry and finally taking the whole model back to matte. Three extra steps, three opportunities for a mistake.
With sprayed insignia the whole merry-go-round falls away. The pre-cut film goes on, the paint is sprayed and the surface can stay exactly as the finished aircraft is meant to look. The model does not have to be flooded with a gloss layer and then laboriously stripped of it again, which is appreciated above all by builders who want to keep the delicate matte tone of olive drab.
1:32 forgives little. The model spans over thirty centimeters and the viewer studies it from close up, so a wavy edge on an insignia or a matte patch left by a decal does not escape attention. That is exactly why sprayed markings caught on earlier and more widely in this scale than on smaller kits.
The film is lifted shortly after the last coat has dried, before the finish hardens completely.
