The P-51B version was the first to receive the British Merlin engine, and with it the range that in December 1943 took American fighters deep over Germany for the first time. It was introduced by the 354th Fighter Group of the Ninth Air Force from Boxted in England, which for that role was nicknamed the Pioneer Mustang Group, and right after it by the 357th Group from Leiston. The framed canopy of this version restricted the view to the rear so noticeably that many machines received a bulged Malcolm hood while still in England.
Over England the two-letter code of the group was painted on the fuselage and the call letter of the aircraft behind the national insignia, to which a colored band on the engine cowling belonged. From June 1944 black and white invasion stripes around the fuselage and the wings were added. Machines handed over to the British as the Mustang Mk.III and aircraft over Italy had a different palette and a different layout of lettering, so the same version looked quite unlike on the southern front and over Norfolk.
The individual parts follow the shape of particular glazing panels, so the laborious cutting of strips of tape is avoided and the frames come out equally wide along their whole length. You will appreciate the inner parts on an open canopy, where the inside of the frame is in view. They are applied to dry, degreased glazing, painted over in the frame color and carefully peeled off once dry.
The large 1:32 scale forgives nothing: the canopy frame measures over ten centimeters on the finished model and every wavy edge shows at first glance. It therefore pays to apply a thin coat of the interior shade first and only then to spray the covering exterior color over it.
