Masks for the P-51D Mustang in 1:32 scale. They contain a double set of pieces for the bubble cockpit, two national insignia masks and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The best-known Mustang is also the first to part with the raised fuselage decking. The designers cut the dorsal area behind the pilot down and set a one-piece teardrop bubble of pressed acrylic on it. The view to the rear thereby turned from the aircraft's weakest quality into one of its strongest and the silhouette of the machine took on the form by which even a layman recognizes the D. For masking that means the exact opposite of the B: instead of a multitude of small panels, a single large area and a narrow front frame.
Cutting the fuselage down, though, left a problem behind it. The machine lost some of its directional stability and in a hard maneuver tended to yaw. A dorsal fillet ahead of the vertical tail surface was therefore retrofitted to the first batches; on the later blocks it was built in from the start. Alongside that, late production saw reworked gun barrels mounted more upright, a different gunsight and racks for rockets. Anyone building an early machine has to leave the fillet ahead of the fin out; anyone building a late one has to add it, and the same logic applies to the small frames on the bubble.
The manufacturer's list includes the bubble treated twice over, that is from the outer and the inner face, two insignia pieces and decals. An expansive domed area is masked quickly, but it calls for attention around the whole perimeter of the piece, which likes to lift. It helps to run a wooden stick around the perimeter and to apply several thin coats rather than one generous one. Neither a kit nor paints are in the bag.
