About product

Fiebelkorn and Ilfrey on one sheet

This sheet brings together two pilots of the 20th Fighter Group, whose machines operated from English bases over occupied Europe. The group was divided into several squadrons and the subjects come from two of them, which can be told from the two-letter code on the fuselage. From one package the modeler can therefore choose between two different color combinations of code letters.

June Nite

Captain Ernest C. Fiebelkorn was among the pilots whose names appear regularly in the lists of the group. His P-51D carried the serial number 44-11161, the code LC and the individual letter N on the fuselage, and the name June Nite on the nose. The LC combination refers to the 77th Fighter Squadron.

Happy Jacks Go Buggy

The second machine, with the serial number 44-13761, had the code MC and the letter I, that is, the markings of the 79th Squadron, and its pilot was Jack M. Ilfrey. The name Happy Jacks Go Buggy belongs among the more playful inscriptions that appeared on the noses of American fighters. It is one of those nicknames that followed a pilot across several aircraft, so the same name can be found on other machines this man flew as well.

Why it helps to know the code letters

American fighter units in England carried a pair of letters for the squadron on the fuselage and, behind the national insignia, one more letter for the particular aircraft. For the builder this has a practical consequence: from the code it is possible to trace where the unit was based, what color its propeller spinner tended to be and what the recognition stripe on the tail surface looked like. Both subjects on the sheet have a different code, so they will differ in color details too.

How to use the sheet

The backing releases in water and the markings are transferred onto the painted model. For the build you need a P-51D kit in 1:32 scale, paints and gloss clear under the decal; none of that is in the package.

FAQ

Both to the 20th Fighter Group. The difference is in the squadron, which you can tell from the two-letter code on the fuselage, LC in one case and MC in the other.

Yes, if you obtain two kits. On one model you will use one set of markings and the other will be left over in reserve.

It is recommended. On a matte surface air is trapped under the backing and a silver border forms around the artwork.

No. You are buying a printed sheet of markings; you choose the kit in 1:32 scale separately.
