A set of precisely cut self-adhesive masks for a model of the Panavia Tornado in the ECR version in 1:32 scale from the Czech manufacturer Eduard. The masks are stuck onto the clear parts, the shade of the frames is sprayed over them, and once they are peeled off the edge is left crisp and straight. In the large 1:32 scale that carries all the more weight, because the area of the cockpit is extensive and every uneven frame is clearly visible on a finished model. Eduard carries this range under the bare name of the subject, which is a common convention in its coded ranges; these are masks, not a kit. The set is cut for a particular kit, so check before buying that it matches the model you are building.
The Panavia Tornado is a twin-engine combat aircraft with a variable-sweep wing, developed in international cooperation and built in several specialized versions. The ECR version is intended for electronic combat and reconnaissance; it carries equipment for locating and evaluating sources of radio emission and supplementary reconnaissance systems. The crew consists of two members seated one behind the other, which at a large scale means a long canopy with several sections and a corresponding number of frames. The ECR version differs from the other forms in details of equipment and in its typical installations, so it is sought after among modelers as a markedly distinguishable variant.
Wash the clear parts and let them dry properly, so that the mask holds over the whole area. Lift the mask off with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it down and press it with a soft stick around the whole perimeter. First spray the shade that is to be visible on the frames from the inside, and only then the exterior color. At a large scale it holds especially true that the paint should be applied in thin coats; a heavy coat runs underneath more easily. Remove the mask while the finish has not yet fully cured.
