About product

The white field that thinned year by year

The German cross was hardly ever painted straight onto the color of the airframe. Beneath it lay a white field that gave it contrast, and its shape went through a development of its own: at first it was a broad white rectangle or square, later only a narrow strip following the outline of the arms remained, and in the last months of the war it was in many places left out altogether. By the width of that white area a machine can be placed in time just as reliably as by the shape of the cross itself.

An improved Bavarian fighter

The letter a in the designation D.IIIa did not stand for a detail. The machine guns moved higher so that the pilot could reach them when they recoiled, the tail surfaces were given greater area and the wingtips were rounded. The Mercedes engine had more power and the machine thus rid itself of the main complaint pilots had about the original version. It entered service in the summer of 1918 and served mainly with Bavarian units.

Before spraying

The film is laid on a finish that is fully cured and is pressed down evenly so that no air stays under it. The white base is sprayed first and the surplus area is then covered. The package carries two stencils for the national insignia, which is fewer than with the related sets, and it matches the extent of the markings this machine carried.

The difference between two stencils and three is not only a question of count. It means how many areas of the aircraft will have to be masked one after another and how much work the modeler saves himself. On machines with simpler markings it pays to devote the rest of the time to polishing the plywood surface, which at this factory was among the smoothest to be seen at the front.

FAQ

The extent of the markings differs from machine to machine. This set is built to the number of insignia the given version carried.

For the Wingnut Wings kit in 1:32 scale.

A mild rounding yes, and it helps to press it down with warm fingers. On a sharp curve it is better to snip the film and lay it on in sections.

Yes, a light color is always laid on first. Over a dark coat the white would need many layers and the edge would thicken.
