About product

RAF WWII Bomber Pilot with parachute 1:32, an Aerobonus resin figure

A figure in 1:32 scale cast in modeling resin, intended to complete a cabinet, a diorama or a scene beside a model of an aircraft. According to the name it is a figure of a Second World War RAF bomber pilot with a parachute. It is not a kit of an aircraft or a finished painted model; the figure comes as a casting to be completed. The exact number of parts and the contents of the package are stated on the box.

The casting and its preparation

Resin holds finer modeling of the face, the folds of the clothing and the harness better than injection-molded plastic, but it calls for a slightly different procedure. First wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water; the surface tends to carry mold release residue, through which paint will not hold. Then look over the casting blocks: on figures they tend to be under the base, on the heels or on the back, that is where removing them will not damage the modeling. Cut them off with a fine saw or a new blade, never snap them. Sand the remains of the block and the thin parting seam on the sides of the figure with fine sandpaper or a file, and protect your airways while doing so, because resin dust is not to be breathed in. Fill any small bubbles and sand them down. If the figure is made up of more than one piece, join the individual parts with cyanoacrylate glue.

Painting

The basis is a thin coat of primer; on smooth resin the paint is easily rubbed off without it. For the face and hands, a procedure that goes from a mid flesh layer through a darker shadow in the recesses to a lighter hint on the raised areas works well; oil paint or heavily thinned acrylic will help. Leather and fabric parts are brought to life by a dark wash that runs into the folds and by a gentle dry brush on the edges. It pays to paint the harness and the buckles last with a fine brush. Even the finished figure out with a matte coat, keeping gloss only where it belongs.

Who the figure is for

  • modelers who build aircraft in 1:32 scale and want a figure beside them for scale and for life in the scene
  • builders of dioramas and cabinet compositions
  • more experienced modelers used to resin and cyanoacrylate glue
  • anyone interested in painting figures with a brush, with oils or with acrylics

The figure is supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is supplied as a resin casting in the color of the material, and the painting is up to you. We recommend starting with a primer.

Cut it off with a fine saw or a new blade a little away from the surface and sand the remainder down. Snapping resin risks breaking a piece off the base or the leg.

Acrylics and oil paints both hold well as long as there is primer underneath. The face is easier to shade with oils, while the clothing and harness are handled well by acrylics and a wash.

The number of parts is stated on the box. Figures at this scale tend to be cast in one piece or in a few parts.
