Three die-cut stencils for the national markings of the SE-5a fighter in 1:32 scale. The film is cut to the Roden parts.
Responsibility details are not available.
British markings were not only the circles on the wings. The vertical stripes on the rudder carried the same three colors but in a different arrangement from the Allies on the other side of the front: the blue stripe lay forward, at the leading edge of the rudder, and the red one at the rear. Anyone who reverses the order gets the French variant and the mistake is immediately visible on the finished model. The width of the stripes was also derived from the outline of the rudder, so it differed between types.
The Royal Aircraft Factory machine had angular, flat sides and straight leading edges, that is exactly the shapes on which asymmetry reads mercilessly. The design grew around a liquid-cooled V8 engine, which gave the aircraft a narrow nose and a good view forward. Pilots liked it for its steadiness in a dive, which made it a reliable gun platform.
The stencil is laid onto a fully cured finish. It is recommended to press it down in the middle first and only then to smooth it toward the edges, so that no air pocket is left underneath. On insignia that run across a rib or a riveted line it helps to run a fingernail along the edge and wait a moment. The set carries three stencils for the national markings and nothing more, so paints, thinner and the kit all have to be obtained separately.
Against a decal, sprayed markings have one practical advantage that shows only once the model has aged: the paint is part of the surface, so a wash or a pigment reacts to it no differently than to the rest of the finish. When a thin dirty glaze is then drawn over the whole machine, the insignia ages along with it and does not stay conspicuously clean.
