Masking films for building the Spitfire Mk.Vb in a large scale. The glazing gets its own cut from the outside and the inside, and a pair of roundel stencils and a decal sheet go with it.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mk.Vb was the most numerously built version of the Spitfire of all. The Merlin 45 engine and the B wing with two 20 mm Hispano cannon and four 7.7 mm machine guns made it the machine that in 1941 bore the main weight of the fighting over the English Channel and a year later defended Malta. The sliding canopy has narrow frames and an armored bulkhead at the rear, so outlining the edges with a brush usually ends in frustration.
A roundel cut from masking film has no carrier film. That is the whole difference from a decal: under a decal a wafer-thin transparent layer remains, which on matte camouflage gives itself away by a different sheen and draws an outline around the perimeter. When the paint is sprayed through a mask it lies directly on the surface, no edge arises and the insignia looks like part of the finish and not like a sticker on it.
The sensible order is to apply the inner mask before the cockpit is closed and the outer one only after the camouflage is finished. The film holds on a smooth finish, so a gloss intermediate coat under the insignia pays off here too. The film will also take a dry test fitting, as long as greasy fingers do not touch it, so the position of the insignia can be tried out at leisure before the airbrush is switched on. And if the roundel does end up placed a little off, the spot is oversprayed with the surrounding camouflage and tried again, which with an applied decal is not possible. Neither the aircraft model nor glue is part of the set.
