Masking sheet for a Grumman TBF-1 Avenger model in a large scale. It covers the canopy from both faces and adds five insignia stencils.
Responsibility details are not available.
Six TBF-1 aircraft took part in the Battle of Midway in June 1942 and five of them did not return. The unhappy start did not prevent the Avenger from becoming the most successful carrier torpedo bomber of the war and from serving long after it ended. The first production form had a machine gun in the cowling, an electrically operated dorsal turret and a large bomb bay closed into the fuselage.
The sheet carries an unusually generous number of parts for the national insignia, five in all, alongside the pair of canopy masks cut for the surface as well as for the inner face. The higher number of insignia stencils matches the fact that American naval aircraft wore roundels on both wings and on the sides of the fuselage.
The insignia stencils go onto finished camouflage and white or blue is sprayed through them in several light coats. Bounding the area around the cutout with paper tape is recommended so that overspray does not reach the neighboring panels. The star with bars is made up of several parts that have to be positioned all at once.
The dorsal gun turret was electrohydraulically powered and was among the first of its kind on a carrier aircraft. Below it the fuselage held the bomb bay, which took a torpedo or four bombs. Anyone building the model with the bomb bay open has to cover the inner faces of the doors too, and the leftover film from this sheet suits their sharp edges better than ordinary tape.
The item belongs among painting masks for aircraft models and includes neither plastic parts nor paints.
