A diorama vignette in 1:32 scale from the MAiM marque builds on a striking rock motif that resembles a stone hand. It is not a model of equipment or a figure: the set serves as a scenic base and a stand into which you set a model that you build separately. It is supplied unpainted and it reckons with being finished by the modeler.
The 1:32 scale is at home with larger figures and with part of the aircraft models, where the base matters twice as much — a large figure on a bare board looks unfinished. A striking rock formation gives the scene an outline, divides the space into foreground and background and offers areas for working with light and shadow. The motif is stylized, so it suits both imaginative and realistic subjects.
First wash the surface in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry, so that the paint holds. The rock is best painted from a dark base: apply primer, then a dark base coat, and gradually draw the structure of the stone out with a dry brush in two or three lighter shades. Accentuate the recesses with a dark wash and use pigments on the faces for dust and weathering. Add mosses and growth sparingly — on stone they look natural only in the places where dampness would hold. Glue the figure on only once the base is finished.
