Wood Decals 1:32 to 1:48 (AK interactive)

A decal sheet with a printed wood grain by AK interactive, intended according to its name for scales from 1:32 to 1:48. It differs from ordinary decals: these are not national markings or lettering but a continuous wood texture. You cut out of the sheet yourself the area matching the part you want to look like wood, typically propeller blades, cockpit floors and sides, wooden fuselage skinning or internal panels on machines from the early days of aviation. This saves the tedious hand painting of wood grain, which is hard to do by hand and never comes out the same twice.

Use

• first level the area under the decal and coat it with a gloss varnish; on a matte surface air is trapped under the film and white patches appear
• trace the shape of the part onto a paper template and only then cut according to it, as the amount of material on the sheet is limited
• soak the decal briefly and let it slide off; large areas easily fold over and stick together
• keep the direction of the grain the same on adjoining parts, otherwise the illusion of wood falls apart
• use a softener to settle it into engraved lines and over curves, and only once it has dried coat it with a matte or semi-matte varnish

Who it is for

You will appreciate the sheet most on biplanes and machines with wooden structures, on wooden propellers and in interiors where the wood is visible. Working with a large-area decal is more demanding than with a small marking, so it pays to try the procedure on an offcut first.
