About product

A metal 7.5 cm barrel for the Tiger Ausf. H2, 1:35 - Aber

This is not a kit but a replacement part. A precisely turned metal 7.5 cm gun barrel with a single-baffle muzzle brake replaces the plastic barrel on a model of the German Tiger tank in the Ausf. H2 version in 1:35 scale. The manufacturer is the Polish company Aber, which has long worked with turned barrels and photo-etched accessories. Replacing plastic with metal removes the parting seam left by the mold and gives the barrel a perfectly circular section and the correct axis. It is based on the dimensions of the Dragon kit.

The real subject

The designation Ausf. H2 relates to a project variant of the Tiger heavy tank that was to carry a 7.5 cm gun in a different turret. Production Tiger Is were armed with an 8.8 cm gun; the variant with the 7.5 cm gun remained at the project stage and never went into production. Models of this type therefore belong among the so-called paper projects, which have their own following among modelers. A single-baffle muzzle brake matches the earlier form of the long German 7.5 cm guns.

Building and painting tips

Cut the plastic barrel off with a saw and square the face of the stub so that the metal part seats square, because any deviation is conspicuous on the finished model, since the eye compares the barrel with the outline of the turret. Glue the metal with cyanoacrylate glue; the joint is stronger if you roughen the mating surface slightly. Apply primer to the metal before painting, because without it the paint slides and rubs off exactly at the muzzle, which is where people hold it most often. The muzzle of the gun is a rewarding place for weathering: gentle darkening and traces of propellant around the muzzle brake bring the model to life, but lay them on sparingly and in thin coats.

Who the barrel is for

  • Builders of German vehicle models in 1:35 scale.
  • Modelers who object to the parting seam and the imperfect circular section of a plastic barrel.
  • Anyone interested in project and prototype variants of military vehicles.
  • Builders of display models, where the detail of the muzzle and the muzzle brake comes out.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The Dragon base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The designation Ausf. H2 relates to a project variant with a different turret and a 7.5 cm gun. Production Tiger Is carried an 8.8 cm gun; the H2 variant remained a project.

It has no parting seam left by the mold, it has a precise circular section and it does not deform. The most laborious part of cleaning the whole model thus falls away.

Cut the plastic barrel off, square the face of the stub and glue the metal part in with cyanoacrylate glue. Roughening the mating surface slightly strengthens the joint.

For the Dragon kit in 1:35 scale. The base kit is not included in the package.
