This is a turned metal accessory in 1:35 scale from the Polish maker Aber. It is not a model of a tank but a replacement barrel that is installed into a plastic kit already being built. The subject is the 90 mm M36 tank gun of the American M47 Patton medium tank, and that in the standard with a cylindrical muzzle brake. The accessory is offered in the variant without a canvas mantlet cover, so a model is reckoned with on which the mantlet cover is not rendered or is not used. Before buying, compare the diameter of the spigot and the length of the barrel with the model you are building on.
A plastic barrel tends to be formed of two halves and after gluing a mold seam is left on it which has to be sanded away. In doing so the circular cross-section is easily spoiled and small details lose their shape. A turned metal part is perfectly straight from manufacture, has a continuous surface with no seam and a correctly drilled mouth. Its weight moreover helps to hold the barrel at the required elevation. On vehicles with a pronounced muzzle brake the difference against plastic is clearly visible.
The opening in the mantlet in a plastic kit sometimes needs drilling out slightly, so that the spigot of the metal barrel seats. Drill gradually, in small increments of diameter. Metal parts are glued with superglue, or secured with a two-part epoxy resin if the joint is under load. Before painting, degrease the surface with spirit and apply a primer meant for metal, otherwise the paint rubs off. It pays to darken the mouth of the barrel with a dark wash or with graphite, so that it looks deep, and to unify the transition to the mantlet with the same color as the hull.
This is a detail accessory, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
