A masking set for painting the road wheels of the Israeli Achzarit heavy armored personnel carrier. This is not a model or replacement wheels — the masks cover the rim so the rubber tire band can be sprayed on its own and with a sharp edge. The set is cut for the kit from Meng.
The Achzarit was created by rebuilding the chassis of the T-55 tank, and that matters for painting the wheels. The chassis of this family carries only five road wheels per side, but exceptionally large ones, and it has no return rollers — the upper run of the track lies directly on the wheels. That means two things. First, there are few wheels, so the whole step is short, which is not often true of tracked equipment. Second, the individual wheels are enormous and the border of the rubber tire band is long and conspicuous on each of them; a mistake here is not divided among twelve parts but stays alone on one large wheel. The gaps between the wheels are also wide, so the floor of the hull shows between them and the running gear reads as more open than on tanks with six wheels.
Because there are only five wheels per side, masking and painting the tire bands can be managed in one evening between varnishing the hull and building the tracks. Place the step like this: spray the hull and the loose wheels in the base shade, let them cure overnight, fit the masks the next day, finish spraying the tire bands and fit the wheels straight onto the arms. The tracks come last — on a chassis with no return rollers the upper run of the track lies directly on the wheels, so once the track is glued you will not move them and cannot repair anything on them.
This is a masking accessory, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
