About product

Quickwheel 1:35 Archer — road wheel masks for the Tamiya kit

A masking set for painting the road wheels of the British Archer self-propelled tank destroyer in 1:35 scale. The set holds no building parts: the masks stick onto finished wheels and separate the rubber tire band from the rim while spraying. It is cut for the Archer kit from Tamiya.

What makes the running gear of the Archer special

The Archer stands on the chassis of the Valentine infantry tank, and in masking terms that is the most interesting thing about the whole machine. The Valentine does not have a running gear of identical wheels but of bogies in which discs of different diameters come together: a large wheel is joined by smaller wheels in the same frame, so on one side of the machine you will find road discs of at least two sizes next to each other. For the modeler that means the masks are not interchangeable with one another and must not be stuck down at random; fitting a mask for a large disc onto a small one is spotted at once, because the rubber runs out onto the rim. Before you start sticking, sort the masks by diameter into two piles and match them by bogie rather than by wheel. Return rollers with a rubber surface of their own also run above the bogies, and they are easily forgotten when painting.

Choosing and preparing the paint

It is precisely on a running gear with discs of different sizes that it pays not to mix only one rubber shade. Mix two: a basic dark gray and a second one slightly lighter, lifted with a pinch of sand. Go over every wheel with the basic shade and only some of them with the lighter one, mainly those nearer the ground that would in reality have worn sooner. The difference should be barely perceptible, or the model looks like a sample card. Lay both colors on in two thin coats and keep the thinning on the thin side, so nothing gathers at the edge of the mask. The final surface should be matte; apply any pigment only once the masks are off, not over them.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of British Second World War equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Builders drawn to the Valentine chassis and its bogies with wheels of different diameters
  • Those who want fine tonal differences on a running gear with no laborious lining
  • Modelers working with an airbrush and mixing their own shades

This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Valentine chassis combines discs of different diameters in its bogies. A mask for a large wheel fitted onto a small one lets the rubber run out onto the rim, which shows at once. Sort them by size beforehand.

Yes, it is a self-propelled gun on the chassis of the Valentine infantry tank. That is why it also has its characteristic springing with discs of different sizes.

It need not be. Two very close shades, with the lower wheels slightly lighter, look more natural. Keep the difference subtle, though, or the model looks like a sample card.

Only once the masks are off. Pigment over a mask clings to its edge and leaves a line once it is peeled away, exactly where you wanted a clean edge.
