About product

Armament for the MBT-70, barrels of 152 mm and 20 mm, 1:35, Aber

This detail set from the Polish manufacturer Aber holds turned metal barrels for the armament of the experimental tank MBT-70 in 1:35 scale. In the package you will find the barrel of the main weapon of 152 mm and the barrel of a 20 mm automatic cannon. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory replacing the plastic parts of the base model. The metal form does away with the mold seam, keeps an exact circular section and offers a faithfully rendered muzzle, which in plastic is reached only by laborious drilling.

The real subject

The MBT-70, in the German designation the Kampfpanzer 70, was a joint American and German project for a main battle tank from the 1960s. The vehicle had an exceptionally low silhouette, hydropneumatic suspension with adjustable ground clearance and the whole crew placed in the turret. The main weapon was a combined system of 152 mm able to launch conventional ammunition and guided missiles alike, and the supplementary armament was a 20 mm automatic cannon. The project proved exceptionally demanding technically and expensive and it was terminated; what was learned from it, however, carried over into the later tanks of both countries.

Fitting and tips

Glue the metal barrels with cyanoacrylate glue, and on larger mating surfaces with a two-part epoxy. Degrease the parts first with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and roughen the mating surfaces gently. Lay on an adhesion primer before painting. The short, massive barrel of 152 mm comes out well if you carefully fill and sand the transitions between metal and plastic. Pick out the muzzle only with a restrained sooting.

Who the set is for

  • modelers of prototype and experimental Cold War vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • enthusiasts of American and German tank projects
  • builders of competition models, where the detail of the armament is judged
  • advanced modelers used to working with metal accessories

This is a detail accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

A joint American and German project for a main battle tank from the 1960s with a low silhouette, hydropneumatic suspension and the whole crew in the turret. It did not reach series production.

The set covers the main weapon of 152 mm and a 20 mm automatic cannon. The number of individual parts is given on the packaging of the set.

It is not. These are detail metal barrels meant to be fitted to a model bought separately.

Degrease them with alcohol, lay on an adhesion primer and spray in thin coats. Without a primer the paint rubs off metal.
