About product

The barrel of the German 88 mm PaK 43 gun for the Waffenträger, 1:35, Aber

This detail set from the Polish manufacturer Aber brings an accurate turned metal barrel of the German 88 mm PaK 43 anti-tank gun in the form used on the self-propelled weapon carrier Waffenträger, in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory replacing the plastic part. Turned metal has no mold seam, keeps an exact taper and offers a faithfully rendered muzzle and muzzle brake, whose shape is among the most conspicuous details of this gun.

The real subject

The Waffenträger, literally the weapon carrier, was at the close of the Second World War a concept for a light self-propelled chassis on which a heavy anti-tank gun could be moved quickly and cheaply. Several competing designs came about, among others from the firms Ardelt and Rheinmetall-Borsig, and it stayed at prototypes and only a very small series. The basis of the armament was the 88 mm PaK 43 gun with its long barrel, one of the most effective anti-tank weapons of its day, used on other German vehicles and in the towed version as well.

Fitting and tips

Glue the metal barrel with cyanoacrylate glue, and on larger mating surfaces a two-part epoxy helps. Degrease the parts with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and roughen the surfaces gently. Paint only after an adhesion primer, or the paint rubs off smooth metal. A long barrel tends to be the most exposed part on a model, so finish it carefully and spray in thin coats; pick out the muzzle and the muzzle brake with a gentle sooting with pigment.

Who the set is for

  • modelers of German vehicles of the close of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • enthusiasts of prototypes and designs built in small numbers
  • builders of competition models, where a long barrel is the most visible of all
  • advanced modelers used to metal accessories

This is a detail accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

A German concept for a light self-propelled carrier of a heavy anti-tank gun from the end of the Second World War. It stayed at prototypes and a very small series.

It is not. This is a separate detail barrel, which you fit to a model bought separately.

A long barrel is the most conspicuous part on a model. The metal version is perfectly straight, without a mold seam and with a real bore at the muzzle.

Degrease it with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and lay on an adhesion primer. Without it the paint does not hold on smooth metal.
