About product

The British BL 8-inch Mk. VI howitzer in 1:35 scale from Roden

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British heavy howitzer of 8 inches, that is, roughly 203 mm, in the Mark VI version. The 1:35 model comes from the Ukrainian maker Roden, which has long devoted itself to the equipment of the First World War and the interwar period. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; once built, the gun is an impressive piece for a display case thanks to its bulky carriage and large wheels, and a rewarding basis for a diorama with a crew.

The real subject

The BL 8-inch howitzer belonged to the British heavy artillery of the First World War. It came about as an answer to the need for a weapon able to destroy field fortifications and trench systems, where ordinary field guns were not enough. A characteristic feature of the series is the long trail carriage with massive wheels and a hydropneumatic recoil and recuperator system damping the heavy recoil. The Mark VI version represented a more developed form of the whole series; it was moved by artillery tractors and deployed in positions behind the front line. Weapons of this type served with a number of armies after the war as well.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts from the sprues with nippers and true the sprue nubs with a file or a scalpel. Glue with thin cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action. The most sensitive part of the build tends to be the carriage and the mounting of the barrel: let the structure cure properly before loading it and keep checking that the gun stands level on all its bearing points. The wheels and their spokes deserve a careful clean-up of the parting seams. We recommend painting over a primer, laying the artillery green or brown-gray on with an airbrush and adding a dark wash in the details. Mud and dust pigments on the wheels and the lower part of the carriage make the model convincing at once.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in First World War equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Builders of artillery and of dioramas with a crew
  • Modelers with basic experience of building multi-part carriages
  • Collectors of British military equipment

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Eight inches, that is, roughly 203 mm. It was British heavy artillery intended to destroy fortifications and trench systems.

Building the carriage and the running parts calls for care and constant checking of the geometry. For a modeler with basic experience it is manageable.

Compare the contents of the box with the illustration on the packaging. Sets of artillery crew in 1:35 scale can be obtained separately.

We recommend a primer, an airbrush and a dark wash in the details. Dust and mud pigments on the wheels and the lower part of the carriage do the model a great deal of good.
