The set is not a model of the vehicle but an accessory for a kit of the British Chieftain main battle tank in 1:35 scale that you have already bought. It deals with a detail where injection-molded plastic traditionally runs into trouble: the end of the exhaust should be hollow, but it comes out of the mold blind. The difference is conspicuous on a finished model, because the exhausts tend to be at the viewer's eye level and smoke and soot effects concentrate around them as well. The designation universal means that the parts are not cut for one single box but for the usual dimensions of kits of this vehicle. The parts are made of resin and plastic.
The Chieftain was a British main battle tank introduced in the 1960s. Technically it is characterized by a steeply sloped front armor plate, a reclining position for the driver with the hatch closed and a multi-fuel compression-ignition engine. It served in the British Army for several decades and a number of other countries used it in various versions. The exhaust outlets on the sides of the hull are among its easily recognizable features.
Cut the original plastic exhausts off and level the surface, and only then try the fit of the new parts. Always offer the accessories up dry first; a universal cut may call for slight shortening or sanding. Attach them with cyanoacrylate glue applied drop by drop. Before painting, degrease the parts and spray them with primer. Exhausts are usually painted differently from the rest of the vehicle, and a dark base, rusted tones applied with a dry brush and finally a light dusting of pigment downstream of the exhaust gases work well on them. It pays to paint them separately and to glue them in only at the end.
