About product

Aber fern fronds (photo-etched vegetation)

This is neither a kit nor a finished model. It is a photo-etched brass fret with fern leaves, that is, modeling material for creating vegetation. Every leaf has etched venation and finely toothed edges, which plastic or paper substitutes cannot achieve. Once taken out of the fret a leaf is shaped, bent into a natural curve and painted. The manufacturer is the Polish firm Aber, which specializes in photo-etched and turned metal accessories for modelers.

What photo-etched vegetation is for

Fern is a key feature of woodland and damp undergrowth. In a diorama it fills the space at the foot of trees, at the edges of paths, in ditches and around water, and gives a scene both volume and a contrast of color against vehicles and figures. Compared with natural materials photo-etched brass is durable, does not curl in damp and keeps the shape you give it. The leaves can be shortened and combined into clumps of various sizes, so the set serves for several scales depending on how large a clump you put together.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel, not by twisting, so that the fine ribs do not break. You can manage the shaping with your fingers over a soft surface or with blunt tweezers. Degrease the photo-etched parts before painting and lay down a primer for metal. Paint in layers: a darker green as the base, a lighter shade on the edges and the tips, and for drier fern add ocher and brown transitions. An airbrush gives smoother transitions, while a brush brings out the venation. Finished leaves are glued into the ground with cyanoacrylate glue and completed with scatter material or static grass.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of dioramas and vignettes with woodland and jungle vegetation
  • Modelers for whom coarse plastic plants are not enough
  • Enthusiasts of realistic undergrowth around vehicles and figures
  • More advanced modelers with experience of photo-etched parts and painting

The accessory is supplied as a photo-etched brass fret, unpainted. The ground, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a photo-etched fret from which the leaves are taken out, shaped and painted, and only then put together into clumps and set into the ground.

The leaves can be used in several scales. The size of the resulting clump the modeler tunes by shortening and combining leaves to suit the scene.

Paint in layers: a darker green base, a lighter shade on the edges and the tips, and for drier plants add ocher and brown.

With cyanoacrylate glue. The transition to the ground is then masked with scatter material, pigments or static grass.
