An injection-molded plastic kit of the T-55 tank in Finnish service, complemented by the KMT-5 mine clearing device, in 1:35 scale by Trumpeter. The model joins the classic hull and cast turret of the T-55 with the set of mine rollers hung in front of the vehicle. The package holds gray plastic on several sprues, a decal sheet and tracks; photo-etched parts are enclosed as well. The exact numbers of parts and schemes differ between releases.
The T-55 is one of the most widespread tanks of the Cold War, the direct successor of the T-54 series with a 100mm gun. The Finnish army operated these vehicles for decades and upgraded a number of them. The KMT-5 mine clearing device consists of a pair of heavy rollers that set off pressure mines in the track of the tank with their weight; a chain with a so-called weight is usually hung between the rollers to set off mines in the middle of the vehicle's path as well. The set allowed tanks to break lanes through mined ground.
First finish the tank itself — the suspension, the wheels and the tracks — and only then start on the frame with the mine rollers, which is mounted on the front of the hull. Dry-fit the frame so that it sits straight. Apply a primer and then the finish; Finnish vehicles wear a broken multi-color camouflage. The rollers and the frame of the device tend to be heavily worn, so lay rust, metal chipping and a thick layer of dust and mud pigments on them. Bring out the panel lines of the tank with a wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
