An accessory for painting, not a model and not a replacement part. The templates mark out the rubber tire band of the road wheel, so you paint it by spraying and need not pull the border with a brush. The set is cut for the Takom kits — wheel dimensions differ between moldings and a mask from another kit will not seat.
The anti-aircraft system stands on the chassis of the Leopard 1, and in masking terms that is the most demanding case in the whole category: seven road wheels on each side, that is fourteen rubber tire bands on one model, plus the return rollers and the drive sprocket and idler wheel. The wheels are large in diameter with a wide tire band, so a mistake on them has nowhere to hide. At the same time the side skirt covers both the upper run of the track and the upper part of the wheels, so once the build is closed up you will mainly see the lower half of the running gear — all the more reason for that half to be clean, because it is all that is left of the whole job. The difference between the A1 and A2 versions lies in the radar and instrument equipment, not in the running gear, so one set serves for both.
This is where the time saved tips most clearly in favor of the templates. Fourteen tire bands by hand means two sessions and a few anxious repairs for most modelers; with the templates it is one spraying. If you are building more than one model on this chassis, the return is clearer still. Conversely, if you plan to swamp the model in mud up to the axles, or build it with complete side skirts and no intention of looking under the hull, the rubber can be managed with a sparing pass of the brush — the result will disappear under the weathering in any case.
