German Pz.IV Ausf.H Early/Mid Basic Photo-Etched Set 1:35 from DEF Model is a basic set of photo-etched metal parts for a plastic kit of the German Panzer IV Ausf.H medium tank of the early and mid production runs. It is not a model of the tank but a detailing addition.
Responsibility details are not available.
This product is not a kit of a vehicle. It is a set of photo-etched metal parts that the modeler uses on an already purchased plastic kit of the German Panzer IV Ausf.H medium tank in the variant that corresponds to the early and mid production runs. The designation Basic means that the set concentrates on the most visible thin-walled parts of the vehicle, that is on those where injection-molded plastic cannot keep to the real thickness of the material.
In 1:35 scale photo-etched brass sheet has a thickness that a plastic part will never come close to. That is exactly why photo-etched parts go onto the fenders and their hinged sections, onto the grilles and screens over the engine cooling bay, onto the clamps, eyes, brackets and other small metal fittings on the hull and the turret. The difference shows above all on the edges, seen from the side and from above, where a plastic part looks oversized. Parts with a moving function can also be bent out of metal into a real position, for instance a folded-up or damaged fender.
The Panzer IV Ausf.H was the most numerous production version of the German medium tank. It carried a long-barreled 75 mm gun and, compared with the older versions, it had thicker frontal armor on both the hull and the turret. It reached the units from 1943 onwards and fought on all the main fronts until the end of the war. Early and mid vehicles differ from late ones in a number of details of the running gear, the exhaust and the superstructure fittings, which is why detailing sets are distinguished by production period.
Nip the parts out with photo-etch scissors or cut them off with a sharp knife on a hard surface, and never tear them out. Make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or between two blades, so that the edge is sharp and straight. They are bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate) or by soldering; cement for plastic does not hold on brass. Before gluing, sand the original molded detail off the plastic until it is smooth. The metal has to be degreased and sprayed with a primer, otherwise the shade will flake off. Fine grilles come out after a dark wash and light drybrushing, and dust and mud are filled in with pigments.
This is a detailing set, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
