About product

Turned StuK 40 L/48 barrel of 7.5 cm caliber, final muzzle brake, 1:35 scale

A metal barrel machined on a lathe, a replacement for the plastic part in models of German assault guns in 1:35 scale. The abbreviation StuK 40 denotes the type of gun, and the figure L/48 the length of the barrel expressed in multiples of the caliber. This form corresponds to the final, that is the last type of muzzle brake and suits StuG III machines in the late form of the Ausf.G version and the StuG IV. It is not a kit and not a model but an upgrade accessory. The material, the length and the contents of the package are given on the packaging.

What the figures in the designation are for

Guns of 7.5 cm caliber with a barrel length of 48 calibers differ from the shorter forms not only in length but also in the shape of the muzzle brake, which changed several times during production. The manufacturer therefore offers the individual forms as separate items so that a modeler can match the right shape to a particular machine. The early, middle, late and final forms of the brake can be told by the number and shape of the chambers and by the external outline. Choosing the right variant matters more in a build than most other details, because the barrel is the most conspicuous part of all. Check against period reference which type of brake your particular machine carried.

Fitting and painting tips

Degrease the metal part with alcohol or mineral spirits before work. Seating the barrel in the mantlet usually calls for slightly widening the opening; go in small steps and test dry so that the barrel sits on the axis and does not point off to one side. Check it from above and from the side before the glue dries. Glue with super glue; plastic cement does not work on metal. Then apply a primer intended for metal and paint it along with the rest of the hull so that the shade and the weathering carry over. The muzzle brake will take a darker tone and discreet picking out of wear, but exaggerated soot staining looks unconvincing.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of models of German assault guns in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who want the right shape of muzzle brake for the late machines
  • Those bothered by the parting seam and the solid muzzle of a plastic barrel
  • Builders who have experience of gluing metal with super glue

This is a separate accessory. A kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
