About product

Sagged wheels for the Japanese Type 16 wheeled combat vehicle: resin set 1:35 (DEF Model)

This product is not a kit of a vehicle. It is a set of replacement wheels cast in resin for a plastic model of the Type 16 wheeled combat vehicle of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The wheels are cast sagged, that is with a realistic deformation of the tire where it meets the road, the way a real tire behaves under the weight of the vehicle.

Why sagged wheels

The Type 16 is an eight-wheeled vehicle, so the wheels make up a large and conspicuous part of the model's silhouette. When they are perfectly round, as injection-molded plastic casts them, the vehicle looks as if it were standing on tiptoe. Resin castings give the tire the right shape at the ground and bring a markedly crisper tread pattern as well as more legible detail on the sidewall and the rim. A casting in one piece has no mold seam down the middle of the tire, which saves the laborious cleaning up of a rounded surface where the tread is easily damaged.

The real subject

The Type 16 is a modern Japanese wheeled combat vehicle with a large-caliber gun in a rotating turret, built on an eight-wheeled chassis. It was designed to be moved quickly under its own power as well as by air, and to supplement heavy tracked tanks in units that need mobility above all. It serves with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and is among the most striking modern subjects of Japanese equipment in 1:35 scale.

Usage and painting tips

Wash the wheels in warm soapy water so that the mold release from the mold disappears. Cut the casting block off with a saw and true the seating surface up wet and with respiratory protection. On an eight-wheeled vehicle it is particularly important that all the wheels stand in one plane and that the flattened part faces down. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) only after checking the stance on a flat board. Paint the tire a dark gray and the rims separately. Japanese equipment is usually painted in a subdued two-color scheme, on which fine dust in the tread suggested with pigments shows to good effect. The accessory is designed for the Tamiya kit.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of modern wheeled armor in 1:35 scale
  • Builders of the Japanese Type 16 vehicle
  • Those who want wheels with a realistic deformation under load
  • Modelers with experience of resin and super glue

This is a set of resin replacement parts, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A modern Japanese wheeled combat vehicle with a large-caliber gun in a rotating turret on an eight-wheeled chassis, intended above all for rapid movement and fire support.

The set is conceived as a replacement for the wheels of the model.

Resin makes it possible to cast the deformation of the tire, a crisper tread and a cleaner rim. Injection-molded plastic cannot manage these shapes technologically.

Wash the mold release off, cut the casting block off, true it up wet and spray on a primer. Without a primer the paint holds badly on resin.
