A masking accessory for painting road wheels, not a kit. The set deals with the transition between the rubber tire and the disk, that is the place that is hardest to draw around by hand and is yet clearly visible on a finished model.
The set is cut for the wheels of the Pershing and Super Pershing kits from Tamiya. Wheel masks are tied to a particular kit, because the dimensions of the parts differ between manufacturers of kits.
A freshly unmasked wheel looks the way it should: two clean colors and a sharp edge between them. But that factory precision is exactly the last step, not the aim. The work that follows gives the wheel age – and it is important that it comes only after the mask is off, because under a mask a pigment would settle unevenly and would be torn off when peeled.
The sequence that has proved itself is this. First seal the whole wheel with a thin layer of clear, so that the weathering has something to hold on to and so that it can be removed in case of failure. Then comes a darker wash into the groove between the rubber and the disk – that groove around the whole perimeter does more for an impression of depth than anything else. Dry brushing or the fine tapping in of scuffs on the rim of the disk follows, that is where a wheel strikes things in service. Dust is applied only at the end, with a pigment or a heavily thinned effect, and from the bottom upward: the most of it belongs on the lower part of the wheel and on the contact with the track, the least on top. Fix the pigment at the end and reduce it slightly, so that it does not come across as a dusting of flour. The result is paradoxical, but it works – the more exact the original edge was, the more believable a dusty wheel looks, because the dust has something to soften.
It is a masking accessory for modelers. The package holds neither a kit, wheels, paints nor weathering products. Store the sheet flat and out of direct sunlight.
