About product

M-46 Patton 1:35 - a plastic kit from Dragon

A classic injection molded kit in the collectors' 1:35 scale from the Hong Kong manufacturer Dragon. The parts are molded from polystyrene on sprue frames, they are glued with modeling cement for plastic and the model is painted once it has been assembled. It is a full kit project, not a finished model or an accessory set.

The real subject

The M46 Patton came about by reworking the older M26 Pershing tank. It received a new power pack with a hydromechanical transmission and modified main armament of 90 mm caliber with a muzzle brake and a bore evacuator. It was the first American tank to carry the name Patton, and it saw action in the Korean conflict alongside older Shermans and Pershings. Its typical identifying features are the pair of exhaust outlets at the rear, the wide fenders and the running gear with torsion bars and six road wheels on each side.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the running gear and the lower hull before you close the hull up — later you will no longer reach them. For gluing the plastic use a liquid extra thin cement, which wicks into the joint and leaves no surplus. Before painting, spray the whole model with a primer, which unifies the surface and reveals unfinished seams. Apply the base shade with an airbrush, create a gloss clear coat under the decals, unify the surface with a matte clear coat once it has dried, and only then work with washes and pigments. On a tank it pays to grade the dustiness from the bottom upward and to rub the edges of the fenders and the step surfaces slightly.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of building military equipment in 1:35
  • Collectors of American postwar tracked equipment
  • Anyone interested in a diorama from the Korean conflict
  • Those who want to finish a model with weathering and dust effects

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a classic injection molded kit — the parts are on sprue frames, and you assemble and paint the model yourself.

Modeling cement for polystyrene, ideally the liquid extra thin type, which wicks into the joint. Use cyanoacrylate glue only on any metal or resin accessories.

The number of parts and the breakdown of the contents are stated on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions.

Rather for a modeler who has already built some military equipment. The running gear, the tracks and the fine parts of the hull call for patience and experience with painting.
