About product

Quickwheel 1:35 M1A2 Abrams SEP TUSK II — road wheel masks for the Academy kits

A masking set for painting the road wheels of the American M1A2 Abrams SEP tank in the TUSK II urban combat fit, 1:35 scale. The set holds no building parts: the masks stick onto finished wheels and hold the edge between the rubber tire band and the rim while spraying. It is cut for the kits from Academy from 2016 and later, specifically the 13298 and the 13504.

What makes the running gear of this version special

The basis of the running gear stays as on the other Abrams tanks: seven road wheels on each side, return rollers, the drive sprocket at the rear. The TUSK II fit changes the essential thing, though — further protective tiles are added to the side armor plates, covering the running gear even more than on the base version. A narrow exposed strip above the ground is left, and that is where it is decided. Modelers of this version tend to skimp on painting the wheels on the grounds that they will not be seen anyway; except that in a case the model is examined from a lowered perspective, and then the exposed strip is exactly in the line of sight, bounded below by the track and above by the tiles, which cast a shadow on it. An uneven rubber edge will not hide in that narrow opening; if anything the opposite.

Choosing and preparing the paint

The key is the order of work. Paint and unmask the wheels before you start on weathering and dust on the underside of the hull, and certainly before you fit the TUSK II side tiles to the model — once they are installed you cannot reach the wheels with an airbrush at any sensible angle and the mask goes on blind. Spray the rubber in two thin coats and thin the paint so that it can be applied at a sharper angle too, because you will be spraying wheels in a deep recess from the side rather than square on. Choose a medium-dark gray shade and leave it matte; the dust and sand come last and will shift the tone around anyway. Shine has no business on the running gear of a tank in urban service.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of modern American equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Builders of the TUSK II version who want the running gear finished before fitting the tiles
  • Those who make dioramas and view a model from a lowered perspective
  • Modelers working with an airbrush at difficult angles

This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

For the M1A2 Abrams SEP TUSK II kits from Academy from 2016 and later, specifically the 13298 and the 13504. With older releases or another brand, compare the wheel diameter beforehand.

Before the TUSK II side protective tiles are fitted. Once they are on you cannot reach the wheels at any sensible angle and you would be sticking the mask down practically blind.

Yes. A narrow exposed strip above the ground is left and from a lowered perspective it is exactly in line. Bounded by the track and the shadow of the tiles, it gives away every unevenness of the edge.

Thin the paint more and spray from the side at a sharper angle in two thin coats. You will not manage a square application there in any case, and thick paint would gather at the edge of the mask.
