A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the American M551 Sheridan light tank in 1:35 scale, cut for the kit from Tamiya. This is not a kit or a replacement part. M551 Sheridan masks are cut for a kit from another manufacturer in parallel, and the two items differ precisely in the target kit — the wheels differ in size, so the sets are not interchangeable.
The Sheridan was built as a light air-transportable tank with an aluminum hull and it shows in the running gear. It carries only a small number of road wheels on torsion bars on each side and has no return rollers — the upper run of the track is led directly over the tops of the wheels. The chassis is therefore airy, uncovered and, seen from the side, exposed practically in full; there is nowhere to hide a botched tire band border. The wheels themselves have a surprisingly large diameter for a light vehicle and a wide rubber tire band, so they form a pronounced part of the silhouette. The drive sprocket is at the front, the idler wheel at the rear, and neither has a tire band. A smaller number of wheels means you will manage the whole job quickly — but also that every mistake is divided among fewer pieces and is that much more conspicuous.
A small batch of wheels tempts you into doing them in your hand. Do not: grease from your fingers is the commonest cause of paint bleeding under the edge of a mask. Wash the wheels, let them dry and spike them on skewers pushed into a polystyrene board. Lift a mask off the sheet with a needle, transfer it with fine-tipped tweezers and seat it with a blunt toothpick; press it down around the circumference, especially where you let go of it. Before you start spraying, go over the wheels through a magnifier with side lighting — a shadow in a gap gives away an unseated stretch before you flood it with paint. Spray square and thinly, in several coats. Lift the masks off in the order in which you fitted them, pulling at a slant across the face of the wheel.
