Self-adhesive masks for painting the road wheels of the American M60A1 tank in 1:35 scale. The set holds no part of the model — it is an aid that marks out the border between the rubber tire band and the metal rim on the wheel, so both areas can be sprayed separately and cleanly. The masks are cut for the kit from AFV Club; a wheel from a kit by another manufacturer may have a different diameter and a differently deep rim, so check the match.
The M60A1 has six road wheels on each side, three return rollers, the drive sprocket at the rear and at the front an idler wheel whose shape resembles another road wheel. The road wheels are dual — two rubber-rimmed discs side by side with a distinct gap in the middle. That gap is the problem when painting: a brush cannot properly reach into it, and yet it is clearly visible from the side. It also matters that the M60A1 has no side plates along its whole length to hide the running gear. The whole assembly stays in plain sight and an unfinished wheel cannot be masked by anything.
The typical mistake with dual wheels is to paint only the outer face and forget the inner rim — the hull color then shines out of the gap between the wheels on the finished model. The second is trying to create the border by turning the wheel against a brush held in place: it looks like a good idea, but the wheel slips between the fingers and the line wavers. The third common misstep is painting the tire band in pure black; real rubber looks more convincing on a 1:35 model in a dark gray tone, because black swallows all the shadow and flattens the wheel. A mask secures the sharp line; the rest is a matter of the shade chosen and the order of work — paint the wheels while they are not yet seated on the hull.
