The stencils are applied to a model that is already painted and cured and serve as a pattern for spraying a camouflage scheme or tactical markings directly into the layer of paint.

The real subject

The 2S3 is a Soviet tracked 152 mm self-propelled howitzer from the 1960s. The gun is mounted in a rotating turret on a tracked chassis, which gives the vehicle a tall, boxy silhouette unlike that of tanks. For a model that means large continuous areas of the turret and the hull, on which a camouflage scheme shows up well and where stencils are at the same time comfortable to work with.

How the stencils are used

• Let the base paint cure fully, and only then apply the stencil
• Degrease the surface and rid it of dust, so that the stencil seats along its whole edge
• On large areas press the stencil down gradually from the middle, so that no air stays under it
• Spray at a right angle, at a lower pressure and in several thin coats
• Take the stencil off soon after the paint has set, pulling at a sharp angle
• Unify the pattern with varnish, and only then apply washes and dust shades
