A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the German Panther medium tank, version D, in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit or a part, but an aid for the painting stage. The set is cut for the Panther D kit from Meng — separate Panther D masks are cut for the kits of several manufacturers and they are not interchangeable with one another, so go by whose box you have at home.
The Panther has an interleaved, so-called staggered running gear: wheels of large diameter sit in two or more planes and overlap one another, so the outer row covers a substantial part of the inner row. For painting that has one fundamental consequence — you have to deal with the tire bands before you fit the wheels to the torsion bars, because once assembled you can reach the inner wheels with neither a brush nor an airbrush. At the same time only a sliver of the inner wheels will be visible, but that sliver is exactly in the line of sight and an unfinished border stands out on it. There are also many wheels on each side, so lining the tire bands with a brush on a Panther is an evening's work with an uncertain outcome.
The order is the key. Before you start, divide the wheels into inner, middle and outer and keep each group apart — in three dishes or in three rows in a foam pad. Spike the wheels on skewers pushed into a polystyrene board, so you need not touch them while spraying. Pick the masks off the sheet with a needle, transfer them with fine-tipped tweezers and seat them with a blunt toothpick; check concentricity through a magnifier under side lighting. Spray the whole group at once with the same number of thin coats, so every wheel has a uniform shade. Once the masks are off, return the wheels to the same rows they were in — on an interleaved running gear nothing can be repaired after assembly.
