About product

Replacement metal barrel for the Type 3 tank destroyer in 1:35 (FineMolds)

This is a turned replacement barrel for the main weapon of the Japanese Type 3 tank destroyer in 1:35 from the Japanese manufacturer FineMolds. It is not a kit of the vehicle or part of one but a single accurate part that replaces the injection-molded plastic barrel from the base kit. The metal barrel has no mold parting line, it is perfectly straight and its muzzle is crisply made, so on a model it immediately raises the overall impression of accuracy.

The real subject

The Type 3 was a Japanese tank destroyer of the Second World War period, built on the chassis of a medium tank. The weapon was mounted in an open superstructure with limited traverse, a solution typical of the improvised self-propelled guns of the day. The barrel, with its characteristic muzzle shape and the taper toward the breech, is one of the most conspicuous features of the vehicle's silhouette, which is why replacing the plastic part with a metal one pays off more on this type than on vehicles with a short barrel.

Usage tips

Cut the plastic barrel off with a saw as close to the shield as possible and clean the remainder up fully. Dry-fit to check whether the metal part sits on the axis and at the right elevation, and open the hole out with a micro drill if necessary. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue or two-part epoxy; ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal. Before painting, degrease the metal and spray it with a primer, otherwise the shade will not take on the smooth surface and will rub off during handling. It is advisable to bring the muzzle out gently with a dark wash or pigment, but apply any sooting sparingly.

Who the part is for

  • Builders of models of Japanese Second World War equipment in 1:35
  • Modelers who are bothered by the parting line and the inaccurate muzzle of a plastic barrel
  • More experienced builders used to cyanoacrylate glue and priming metal
  • Collectors who fine-tune a model to competition quality

The accessory is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It does not. It is a single replacement part, specifically a turned barrel. The base kit of the tank destroyer has to be bought separately.

That is not stated here. Before buying, check that the pin diameter and the length of the barrel match your kit, or allow for opening out the hole in the shield.

Cyanoacrylate glue or two-part epoxy. Classic cement for plastic works by melting the material, so it does not hold on metal.

Yes, we recommend it. On degreased metal without a primer the paint rubs off and shiny metal marks soon appear while the model is handled.
