The package holds a turned metal barrel for building the Soviet JS-7 heavy tank in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle and not a finished model but a replacement part, with which the plastic barrel from the base kit is replaced. That has to be bought separately. The barrel is intended for the Trumpeter 05586 kit.
The JS-7, also designated IS-7, was a Soviet heavy tank designed shortly after the Second World War. It was the heaviest and most heavily armed machine of its family, with a gun of large caliber and massive armor of streamlined shapes. In the end it never entered series production and stayed at the prototype stage, but thanks to its dimensions it remains a rewarding subject among modelers to this day.
The longer and thicker the barrel, the worse a plastic part copes. Two-piece barrels of large calibers tend to have a gap right around the circumference, lose their circular profile once sanded and like to sag in storage. A turned metal piece is straight, exactly round and with a muzzle drilled to depth. On such a prominent barrel that is a difference visible at first glance.
A metal barrel of this caliber has a noticeable weight, so the joint has to be strong. Degrease the surface in the seating, roughen it with fine abrasive paper and to be on the safe side choose two-part epoxy — cyanoacrylate alone may give way in time on a heavy part. Before it cures, check that the barrel lies on the axis of the turret; seen from the front, any deviation is noticed at once. Do the painting over a base for metal and put the finished model down so that the barrel does not carry the weight.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which is not part of the package. Glue, paints and other materials are not enclosed.
