Masks for the road wheels of the Sherman Mk III in 1:35 scale

The set holds masking elements for the wheels, not parts of a model. You apply them to the wheels from a particular kit and spray the second shade over them, so that a regular edge arises between the rubber tire and the wheel. The set is cut for the kit of the Sherman Mk III from the Dragon company. Mk III is the British designation for the American version of the Sherman tank with a diesel engine, which the British operated during the Second World War.

The order of painting: rubber or wheel?

Both orders work and it is the contrast that decides. If you spray the dark shade of the tire onto the whole wheel first and mask only the face of the wheel, the lighter color of the wheel covers the dark base less well and more coats are needed, but the edge on the tire is clean. The opposite procedure, that is the light wheel first and then masking the wheel and spraying the tire, needs fewer coats, but any overrun of the dark color is immediately visible on the light wheel. On a vehicle with running gear of this type the first variant proves itself, because the tire forms the visible edge around the whole perimeter.

What to watch out for

• Leave the wheels on the sprue gate or on wire, as they are easier to handle during masking and during spraying.
• Apply the paint at a right angle, not at an angle, otherwise it will creep under the margin of the mask.
• Take the mask off at an angle across the edge, not straight upward.
• Before weathering comes, let the finish dry, and dust and mud will then only soften the edge.

Who the set is for

For builders of Allied armored hardware in 1:35 scale who want the running gear properly finished. On a model with a large number of road wheels the difference between an edge drawn by hand and a masked one is noticed at first glance.
