A masking set for painting the road wheels of the T-60 light tank in 1:35 scale. This is not a kit: the masks stick onto the wheels of a model that is already built, so that the rim stays covered while spraying and the rubber color falls only on the tire band. The set is cut for the T-60 kit from MiniArt, because both the diameter of the rim and the width of the tire band differ between kits.
The T-60 is a light tank with torsion bar springing and only four road wheels on each side. It has no return rollers — the upper run of the track bears directly on the road wheels, so their outer face stays visible in full on a finished model, from the hub to the edge of the tire band. The wheels are small and very much alike, while the drive sprocket at the front and the idler wheel at the rear have a different shape and diameter. It is on this subject, therefore, that a mistake of confusion is most easily made: a mask that is off center or one size out shows far more on a small wheel than on the large wheel of a heavy tank. Before sticking them down, lay the wheels out by position and match the masks one at a time.
Rubber on a model is almost never black. On the small wheel of a T-60 pure black swallows all the shape and the tire band then looks like a hole. Better is a dark gray tone with a hint of brown, mixed from black and gray with a drop of brown if you like. Thin the paint more than you are used to on a hull — the area of the tire band is small and thick paint gathers at the edge of the mask, where a palpable step is left once it comes off. Count on two or three transparent coats rather than one opaque one. Leave the surface matte; rubber does not shine and satin would make the wheel look like plastic.
This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
