A masking set for painting the road wheels of the M60A1 medium tank in American and Israeli service alike. It is neither a kit nor replacement wheels — the masks cover the rim, so the rubber tire band can be sprayed in a shade of its own with a sharp edge. The set is cut for the kit from Academy; another treatment of the same tank may have wheels of a different diameter.
The M60 carries six pairs of road wheels per side on torsion bars, the drive sprocket is at the rear, the idler wheel at the front, and three return rollers run between them. The number of return rollers is in fact the characteristic feature that tells the M60 from the older M48 — that one has five. The wheels are dual, with a massive rubber tire band and a rim whose pressed recess forms a pronounced division. On the model that means two rubber borders on each wheel from the outside and a great deal of repetition: twelve wheels per side painted by hand means twenty-four strokes in which the width of the line has to be the same every time. That is exactly the situation in which a mask saves more than time — it saves the frustration over that one wheel that did not come off.
Waiting for the paint is the crucial part. Let the base shade on the hull and the wheels harden for at least a day, and only then lay the masks on; on a freshly dried acrylic coat an adhesive mask likes to tear the paint away with it, and repairing a small wheel is unpleasant. The step therefore belongs at the boundary between the base coat and the weathering: the base first, a day's pause, then the masks and the tire bands, and only after them the washes, the dust and the mud. On Israeli machines a heavier layer of dust is usually laid over the running gear anyway, so a sharp edge will be somewhat lost under it — but it has to be correct underneath.
This is a masking accessory, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
