A masking set for painting the road wheels of the American M60 medium tank. This is not a model or a set of replacement parts: the masks cover the rim of the wheel so the rubber tire band can be sprayed on its own and with a sharp edge. The set is cut for the kits from ESCI/ERTL and Italeri, that is, for the older molds that are still available today.
The M60 has six pairs of dual road wheels per side, the drive sprocket at the rear, the idler wheel at the front and three return rollers. The wheels are large, with a wide rubber tire band and a deep pressed rim — the tire band therefore forms a long and clearly visible ring. The tank also has no full side skirts along its whole length, so the running gear reads well from the side and the wheels are among the first things that catch the eye on a model. With the older molds the situation is somewhat more demanding than with modern kits: the wheels are often assembled from two halves and the seams have to be sanded down, or a mask would not bond tightly to an uneven tire band and the paint would bleed precisely at the join.
That is exactly why work on the wheels starts earlier with these kits than elsewhere — already while cleaning the parts up. Glue the halves of the wheels together first, let the join dry properly and sand it so the tire band is smooth all the way around. Only then comes the base coat, and once it has cured, the masking step. A preparatory step that has been skimped shows up at once with masks: the paint gets under the edge exactly where an unsmoothed seam was left. Fit the wheels to the suspension arms only with the tire bands finished, and the tracks last.
This is a masking accessory, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
