About product

Vickers 6-Ton light tank Alt B Early, Finland, 1:35 scale

A kit of the Vickers 6-Ton light tank in 1:35 scale from CAMs. The designation Alt B, that is alternative B, refers to the single-turret form of this export type, whereas alternative A had two separate small turrets. The word Early in the name specifies the early form of the machine and the suffix Finland its Finnish operator. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the number of marking schemes are given on the box and in the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The Vickers 6-Ton, also known as the Vickers Mark E, was a British light tank designed in the 1920s purely for export. The British army did not adopt it, yet it became one of the most influential armored vehicles of its day: it was light, simple, and its running gear with leaf springs and paired road wheels became the pattern for designs in several other countries. It was built in a twin-turret variant and in a single-turret variant with gun armament. Finland was among the customers that bought the type and went on modifying the machines in its own service. The armament of the Finnish machines of the early period differed from one vehicle to another, so when building a particular machine go by period reference.

Building and painting tips

On this type the running gear is on show and decides the final impression, so take care to align the two sides and keep the road wheels in plane. Fit and secure the tracks before you finally close the hull up and paint it. Finish and paint the inside of the turret and the open hatches before closing up; later you cannot reach them. On a small tank, modulating the shade over the large hull surfaces makes a difference, as otherwise it looks flat. Build the weathering from the bottom up: dust pigments on the running surfaces and the lower part of the sides, dark washes into welds and rivets, and a fine metal sheen rubbed onto the edges. For northern service a winter finish can be considered, but for that you need period reference for the particular machine.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of interwar and early armored vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • Anyone interested in export designs and their foreign operators
  • Collectors building the line of development of light tanks of the 1930s
  • Builders who want a smaller hull with a large share of running gear

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Alternative B is the single-turret form of the type with gun armament. Alternative A, by contrast, had two separate small turrets with machine guns.

The Finnish machines went through modifications and the armament differed from one vehicle to another. For a particular machine go by period reference and the enclosed instructions.

The contents of the package, including the number of parts and any photo-etch, are given on the box and in the enclosed instructions.

Rather for a modeler who already has a build behind them. The running gear with its many small road wheels calls for accuracy in aligning the two sides.
