The Warrior is a fairly fast tracked vehicle on torsion bars, and its road wheels are large against the weight of the vehicle — there are six on each side and they have a clearly divided rim with a rubber ring. There are few return rollers in the upper run, so the band between the wheels and the upper edge of the running gear looks emptier than on tanks. The main complication, though, is that the whole running gear runs behind side skirts, which on the Warrior are tall and straight: the wheels therefore peep out only as a lower sliver and the edge of the tire band ends up directly beneath a long horizontal line. Anything that does not fit is compared in that narrow band with the perfectly straight edge of the skirt, and it stands out at once. The drive sprocket at the front is toothed and of a different diameter; it is dealt with separately.
Making twelve identical annuli with a compass cutter means setting the radius twice and hitting the center twelve times — and a small deviation is enough for the ring to be wider on one side. A strip of tape layered around a wheel, in turn, never lies flat and forms a step at the overlap where paint bleeds under. A ready-made shape avoids both of those weaknesses and above all saves time. Paint, mask and spray the wheels while they are still separate, that is, before the skirts are fitted.
