A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the Soviet ZSU-23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft system. It is not a kit or a replacement part, but an aid that separates the rubber tire band from the rim on the wheel. The set is cut for the Meng kit — more than one manufacturer offers this type in 1:35 scale and the masks cannot be swapped between their models, so choose by the kit you are building.
A bulky angular superstructure with a turret, barrels and a radar sits above the running gear, so the vehicle looks heavy — yet it rests on a light tracked chassis with wheels of small diameter. That mismatch is characteristic of the Shilka and it has a practical effect on painting: the wheels are set deep under an overhanging hull and fenders, so little light falls on them and the underside of the model easily merges into one dark area. Without a legible division between tire band and rim the running gear becomes a shapeless strip and the vehicle looks as though it were standing on the ground with no wheels at all.
It is precisely in shadow that a sharp border is most valuable. The difference between dark rubber and a lighter rim is what makes it possible to tell the wheels apart at all in a poorly lit case; once the border blurs, the running gear stops working as a divided whole. On a shelf that shows up as a model looking static and flat; on a competition table it shows when a judge turns the model, shines a light on the running gear and sees at once whether a system was used there, or a brush and hope.
