The abbreviation CAG denotes the commander of a carrier air group, and his aircraft is traditionally the most strikingly decorated machine in the whole unit. A colored fin, stripes on the engine covers and a prominent number make them the most rewarding modeling subject of all, because they turn an otherwise monotonous machine into a compelling model. It is precisely at these commanders' examples that the sheet is aimed, specifically at two-seat trainer Cougars. The Air Wing All Stars range is published by Furball Aero-Design, an American specialist in decals for naval aviation.
The Grumman F9F-8T was a two-seat trainer derivative of the carrier Cougar fighter, that is of the swept-wing jet version that followed on from the earlier straight-wing Panther. In 1962 it was redesignated TF-9J as part of the unification of aircraft designations in the US Air Force and Navy, which is why both designations for the same type appear in the title. In the training role it served long after the combat versions were withdrawn, and some of the machines also reached forward air control units.
Colored commanders' markings have a deep background that shows through only slightly on light finish, yet it still pays to apply them to a smooth gloss surface. Release the large fin decals in warm water first, carry them over to a dampened area and only then align them; dry, you will no longer move them. Soften the transitions over the fin ribs and press the decal down with a soft cloth. Once it has dried, check against the light whether any air has stayed under the film, pierce any bubble with a needle and go over it with a decal softener.
