A decal sheet in 1:48 scale from the Canadian brand Iliad Design. It is devoted to North American P-51 Mustang machines in service with American Air National Guard units and is designated as the third part of a series. That means it follows on from earlier sheets on the same theme and brings further machines. The sheet is sold separately; the model of the aircraft has to be obtained separately.
The North American P-51 Mustang is an American single-engine fighter with a V engine and a laminar-flow wing profile, which made its name above all as an escort fighter. After World War II it stayed in service for a number of years, among others precisely with the Air National Guard squadrons of the individual states, where it carried the designation F-51. The post-war machines are attractive for modelers because they left wartime camouflage behind: they flew mostly in polished metal with color bands on the tail surfaces, the nose and the tanks, supplemented by the insignia of the state and the unit. It is precisely these striking yet restrainedly placed elements that make the Guard Mustangs a rewarding theme.
A finish in polished metal is demanding on the base: every groove and fingerprint is visible under a metallic finish, so sand and degrease the model carefully before the silver paint. Apply the decals onto a glossy surface – metallic finishes tend to be smooth but not always glossy enough, so going over the spot locally pays off. Soak the decal for a few seconds in lukewarm water, let it rest and move it onto the model together with the backing. Dose decal softener carefully on large color areas, so that the film does not ripple. At the end, do not go over the metallic surface with matte varnish across the whole area – it would kill the gloss; it is enough to fix the surroundings of the decals with gloss or semi-matte varnish.
The package holds decals. The kit, paints and varnish are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
