About product

New Ware 1:48 B-26C-50 Invader, the Basic masking set

A set of self-adhesive masking templates of kabuki paper for building a model of the twin-engine Douglas Invader in 1:48 scale. The templates are pre-cut to shape; a modeler lifts them out of the sheet and sticks them straight onto the place that is to stay unpainted. The Basic grade is the smallest extent of the New Ware set.

Why kabuki paper in particular

Kabuki, also known as washi, is a thin Japanese paper with a low-tack acrylic adhesive. Compared with ordinary masking tape it has three advantages: it can be pressed into a curve without creases, it holds even on smooth clear coat, and it leaves no adhesive residue when removed. At the same time it is thin, so the edge of a painted area is crisp and no step forms under it. That is exactly why a clean transition between the frame and the clear area is achieved on glazing, which is hard to reach by cutting tape by hand.

Usage tips

Lift the templates out of the sheet with a scalpel or sharp tweezers and avoid touching the adhesive side with your fingers. Lay each mask down dry first, check that it fits the engraved shape, and only then press it on. Pay particular attention to the edge, which you should go over with a toothpick or a wooden stick so that paint does not flow under it. Cover any remaining exposed areas of the glazing with a piece of tape or with masking fluid. Apply the paint in thin coats, as a thick coat tears when the mask is removed. Take the masks off while the paint is freshly dried, not after several days, when the adhesive clings more. If the paper comes away stiffly, warm it with a hair dryer on a low setting.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Invader model in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want crisp glazing frames without cutting tape
  • Those who want the basic extent of a masking set
  • Beginners who are not yet managing to mask a canopy

This is a masking set. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A thin Japanese paper with a low-tack adhesive. It can be bent into a curve without creases, it holds on clear coat and it leaves no residue once removed.

Basic is the basic, smallest extent of the set. The particular list of areas that the individual grades cover is not stated here.

Shortly after the paint has dried. After several days the adhesive clings more and there is a risk of pulling the finish off. Gentle warming helps to release stiffened paper.

They are not. The masks are removed after painting and do not stay on the model. They serve only to make the paint cover the intended area alone.
