Printed markings 1:48 for two B-29 Superfortresses: a machine of the Twentieth Air Force from January 1945 and a postwar bomber with a white letter in a circle.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Boeing B-29 was the most complex combat aircraft of its day. A pressurized cabin, remotely operated gun turrets and a range of over five thousand kilometers made it a machine that in 1944 nothing else could match, and at the same time a machine that swallowed more money than the development of the atomic bomb.
The first subject is the aircraft 42-24614 of the 873rd Bomb Squadron of the 498th Bomb Group, that is, a unit that flew over the Japanese islands from the island of Saipan. It carried an insignia in the form of the letter T and a numeral in the tail marking and was among the first Superfortresses to reach the Marianas. The second subject is the later machine 44-27326 of the 325th Squadron of the 92nd Bomb Group, recognizable by the circle with a letter on the rudder. That one already belongs to the Korean period, when B-29s flew from the Japanese base at Yokota and their role shifted from strategic raids to the support of the ground front.
The large tail insignia of a Superfortress will not seat on the model at the first attempt. Leave a layer of water under it so that the printing floats, and only once the position is right blot the water off with the edge of a paper tissue. Anyone who tries to move a partly dried film usually tears it. Patience pays off more here than any preparation.
